40 cm Cast Iron Roller
Cast iron rollers play an important role in seedbed preparation. By consolidating the upper soil layer to approximately sowing depth, they help retain moisture and encourage moisture from lower layers, which the plant cannot otherwise use, to move upwards. This improves seed-to-soil contact and supports easier germination.
Application and benefits
Before sowing, breaking down clods and levelling the soil surface helps the seed drill work smoothly without blockages. Rollers are also used after winter to consolidate soil that has become loose and lifted following pre-winter sowing.
In a rolled field:
The seed drill sows evenly without gaps, improving crop emergence.
Seed-to-soil contact improves, increasing germination rates.
Rolling helps achieve higher yields.
It reduces water requirements.
It helps minimise soil erosion.
